Based around the often absurd, yet comically endearing interviews conducted by Chinese journalist Al Di, Al 'D' TV presents an innovative and completely fresh take on the talk-show/interview format. Al's heart-on-your-sleeve personality, and seemingly haphazard questioning, coupled with his obvious enthusiasm for music, enables him to provoke earnest responses from his interviewees. There should be also no doubt that though Al's interviews are often filled with hysterical laughter, and his image seems to be one of hilarity, Al's dedication and understanding of the music world is no joke. As much as the show is dedicated to entertainment, it is also dedicated to insight.

The bulk of the show's projected 22-minute frame would be a weekly interview between Al and a relevant artist/musician at that time. One of the primary interests of Al's interviews is to promote exposure to original and cutting edge artists, as well as those who are perhaps underexposed. Unlike a large portion of entertainment interviews conducted today, Al's interviews are not focused on the commercial aspects of the arts/music scene, but rather on the character of the artists themselves. Obviously, Al makes concessions to the need for the artists to be able to bring up or otherwise plug recent projects or tours, but, in general, the concern of Al 'D' TV is capturing the real artists and not the created facades that surround them. In essence, Al 'D' TV is a showcase for artists as people, not as products; Al cracks jokes, tells tales, and draws hilarious comparisons, he produces laughter, insight, and the occasional raised eyebrow, but mostly he produces the truth.

Book-ending Al's interviews, and occasionally acting as an intermission, are various short films, monologues, and other creations by Al and the rest of the Al 'D' TV crew. These creations often act as a parody of programs like "Entertainment Tonight" and "E-Talk Daily" (in fact, a projected segment is called D-Talk Daily) and offer other opinions outside of the rather homogenous flattery of celebrity based programming. Additionally, Al 'D' TV producer Colin Askey, who himself has worked on several short films which have screened in festivals across North America hopes for these intermittent segments to become a showcase for new and upcoming artistic talent and ideas. The content and structure of these segments are generally open-ended to allow for greater creative freedoms in their conception, thereby these segments can act as a sort of extension to the madcap world of Al's interviews.

"I first met Al in school. We didn't really talk to much at first but during class discussions and such I could tell he was very passionate about music. One night after exchanging numbers with Al who had wanted to get together I went to an Arab Strap concert by myself. I had never invited Al because he seemed like more of a head banger and I didn't think he would be interested. However while at the concert I started getting numerous drunken phone calls from Al saying he wanted to come to the show. I tried explaining to him that it was sold out but about half way through Arab Strap's set Al showed up screaming and banging his head. Since he writes for Asia's Rolling Stone he had talked his way in and was making quite the spectacle in front of a crowd of indie kids that didn't know what to make of some metal head dressed in an Iron Maiden t-shirt and bandana screaming at the top of his lungs to Arab Strap. Even the singer Aidan Moffat was taken back pausing mid song to say in his wonderful Scottish accent "Please shut up, you're making me fuck up my lyrics." After the show we walked home together as we lived on the same block. Al wanted to play me some of his new songs so he ran inside and grabbed his guitar. We then sat in our alley for an hour or so and Al in an English all his own sang me some of the finest love songs I'd ever heard. That was how I met Al. Since then our relationship has blossomed over many karaoke nights, short films, and good talks. Al Di is one of the most passionate and dedicated people I've met. Watching Al interview is to watch someone do what they truly love to do and were meant to do, Al Di is a master at work. He is clever with an immature sense of humour. Al holds a certain sincerity and a childish innocence about him which people trust. These traits not only allow him to be forgiven for his absurd questions or remarks but also invoke an honesty in musicians that few people are able to do. In a world full of monotony Al is truly an original, we hope ALDTV reflects this." Colin Askey, Producer
